Why I Recommend Moldex Pura-Fit and Moldex 2200 NIOSH N95 (and When I Don't)
Here's my view: the best PPE is the one people actually wear. Not the one with the most impressive spec sheet. If you've ever watched a worker take off an uncomfortable respirator 20 minutes into a shift, you already know why I say this.
I'm a safety equipment buyer. I've been handling PPE orders for 11 years, mostly for two manufacturing plants. I've personally made—and documented—four significant procurement mistakes, totaling roughly $12,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's PPE checklist. I'm not writing this to sound like a hero. I'm writing it because I had to learn the hard way.
Protection is a boundary, not a product
Every so often, someone finds our site by searching what is the purpose of a construction fence? The answer sounds almost too simple: a construction fence keeps people outside the hazard zone. It doesn't remove the hazard. It doesn't stop every piece of debris. It draws a line between danger and the people who haven't been trained to handle it.
PPE works the same way. An N95 respirator doesn't clean the whole room. Earplugs don't lower the machine noise. They reduce what gets through the boundary. If the boundary fails—because the respirator doesn't seal, or the earplug isn't inserted—the protection fails. That's why I say there is no such thing as 'the best PPE.' There is only the right product, worn correctly, for the right hazard.
The weirdest search terms taught me something
I check search terms more often than most buyers, I think. The normal ones are easy: Moldex, Moldex Pura-Fit earplugs, Moldex 2200 NIOSH N95. Then there are the weird ones. Someone landed on our page this month by searching spongebob handcuffs. I'm not sure why. Another common one is wrangler riggs workwear. I can't sell you a pair of jeans, sorry.
But I don't ignore those searches. They tell me that people look for safety solutions based on the job they imagine, not the category. SpongeBob handcuffs are not PPE. Wrangler Riggs workwear is durable clothing, but it won't stop silica dust from reaching your lungs. The gap between what a product looks like and what it's actually designed to do is where accidents happen.
Why I keep ordering Moldex Pura-Fit earplugs
Now, to a product I do order. The Moldex Pura-Fit earplugs are our default hearing protector in the machine shop and packaging hall. The box says NRR 33. That number gets a lot of attention, and it's a good number. But the real reason I keep ordering them is less glamorous: our crew actually keeps them in their ears.
In Q3 2023, we ran a small trial with 22 workers and four styles of foam earplugs. The one with the highest published NRR didn't win. Moldex Pura-Fit won, selected by 14 of 22 workers. The Moldex 2200 NIOSH N95: my go-to, with limits
The first time I ordered the Moldex 2200 NIOSH N95, I wasn't expecting much. It's a simple, disposable filtering facepiece respirator (in other words, the mask is the filter). But it soon became the model we hand to most of our crew for dust and non-oil aerosol tasks. It fits more face shapes than anything else we've tried in that category.
Here's the part I want to underline: N95 is a filter classification, not a universal fit guarantee. According to NIOSH (cdc.gov/niosh), an N95 respirator filters at least 95% of airborne particles, and it is not resistant to oil. It does not mean 'protects against everything.' And it doesn't mean it protects you if the facepiece leaks.
The question everyone asks is, 'Which brand has the highest rating?' The question they should ask is, 'Does this fit my workers' faces and is it right for the contaminant?' I still kick myself for not fit-testing earlier. If I'd done that in 2019, I'd have saved about $3,100 on respirators that ended up in a training cabinet. That was a painful way to learn the difference between an approved product and a product that works.
A checklist I wish I'd had in 2019
After the third product compliance rejection in Q1 2024, I created a pre-check list for every PPE order. Since then, we've caught 47 potential errors using it. The list is pretty simple:
- Identify the exact contaminant or hazard before choosing anything.
- Check the NIOSH approval number on the box—not just the product name.

But what about cost?
I know what someone in procurement is thinking: 'Can't I just buy the cheaper generic N95? The standard is the same.' I used to think that myself. But a respirator that fails the user seal check is not safer. An earplug that sits in a pocket because it's uncomfortable is not safer. The lowest bid looks great on paper until you measure worker exposure.
This is where I have to be honest about limitations. I recommend Moldex for maybe 80% of our tasks. For that 80%, the Pura-Fit earplugs and the 2200 NIOSH N95 are the ones I order without much internal debate. But if you need protection against organic vapors, acid gases, oil-based aerosols, or an immediately dangerous atmosphere, stop reading and talk to an industrial hygienist. No N95 is built for that, and no brand can honestly claim otherwise.
The bottom line
Take it from someone who lost $12,000 learning this: PPE is a construction fence. It should be placed between the worker and the hazard, and it should be designed for that specific gap. The Moldex Pura-Fit earplugs and Moldex 2200 NIOSH N95 have earned a spot in our program. They're not perfect for every job. But for the jobs they're designed for, they're the tools that my crew actually uses. That's the whole point.
